Sacred Conversations

The Vestry is making a concerted effort to encourage the parish to break through the denial about racism.  We believe our mission as St. Mary’s Episcopal Church is to seek to reconcile God’s work for justice. Consequently, two listening sessions were held during the fall.  On September 11, 2016 attendees viewed the film American Denial.   This documentary focused on Gunnar Myrdal’s 1944 investigation of racism in America and explored the unconscious biases around race and class.   An open and vulnerable discussion followed the film.  A follow-up dialogue occurred in October. Participants watched a You Tube video of Bishop Curry’s comments on Spirituality and Racism.   The session ended with a Mother Teresa prayer for forgiveness for unwittingly sharing in conditions or in a system that perpetuates injustice.

The film, Hidden Figures (a movie of significance as it contains many topics on Social Justice) was  offered for viewing and discussion on June 11, 2017.

The last of the film-dialogue listening sessions for 2017 was the film Mirror of Privilege:  Making Whiteness Visible.

Similar discussions are planned for  2018.  With wisdom you will learn what is right and honest and fair.  Proverbs 2:9
